Selichot Program & Service

Dear Congregants and Friends,

I hope you are well and enjoying the summer months. At Congregation Shir Chadash we are already planning and looking forward to the approaching High Holy Days.

The first observance this September will be for the Selichot (forgiveness) service. Selichot prepares us spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur which follow soon after. The Selichot service is held on a Saturday evening before Rosh Hashanah. At the Selichot service, we begin to examine our deeds of the past year. We seek forgiveness from God and promise to improve our behavior in the coming year.

The Religious Practices Committee extends to you a warm-hearted invitation to join us for the Selichot service on Saturday, September 24, 2016. It is our tradition at Congregation Shir Chadash to gather with friends at 8:00 p.m., prior to the evening service, to view a film. The content is intended to guide us as we reflect on our own actions over the past year. After the film, there will be a. brief discussion before the service begins at 10:00 p.m.

This year we will view the film Conspiracy. This 2001 HBO production focuses on the Wannsee Conference of 1942, in which top Nazi officials discussed and planned the “Final Solution” to the “Jewish Question.” Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Eichmann were among those present at the meeting. In just over an hour the details were laid out for rounding up and eventually exterminating all the Jews in Europe. The participants’ discussion and the manner in which they so nonchalantly planned to murder Jews is shocking. Early in the film the “Jewish Problem” is stated as a “Storage Problem.”

Conspiracy does not contain graphic or disturbing imagery. However it is definitely horrifying. The film is rated R for some language.

After the film, at about 10:00 p.m., the familiar Torah covers will be replaced by the white High Holy Day mantels. Friends and families of the mantle donors are encouraged to participate in this ceremonial part of the service. All congregants are welcome to attend the Selichot service.

We hope you will join us for a most interesting evening as we prepare for the High Holy Days of 5777.

Wishing you and your family a Shana Tovah,

Art Oster
Religious Practices Vice-President
Congregation Shir Chadash
